Moose hunters are following the rules

Most hunters inspected during the opening week of the gun season for moose in the Northeast Region were obeying Ontario’s hunting regulations.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers conducted an enforcement blitz between Oct. 10 and 18.

Officers were checking for compliance with hunting regulations and paying special attention to safety while hunting.

Conservation officers inspected more than 3,200 hunters throughout the week. They laid 109 charges, issued 170 warnings and seized illegally harvested fish and wildlife. Charges were laid for:

• Failure to wear hunter orange 
• Carrying loaded firearms in vehicles and vessels 
• Failing to wear a helmet while on an all-terrain vehicle 
• Liquor-related violations. 

Officers also used the opportunity to educate the public about safety offences and their possible consequences.
