Laurentian University and publisher Prise de parole will honour poet Robert Dickson at a reception this Thursday at 3 pm at the university. Dickson, a French studies and translation professor is the winner of the 2002 Governor General?s Literary Awards, in French, in the category of poetry. Dickson was recognized for his compilations of poems Humains paysages en temps de paix relative.

The Independent Living Resource Centre, a community-based non-profit organization providing programs and services to persons with disabilities, officially opened its doors last week at 66 Elm St. Sudbury MP Diane Marleau, Traci Walters, national director of the Canadian Association of Independent Living and Earl Black, chair of the board of directors, were on hand for the opening ceremony Friday.

The centre is being funded by Human Resources Development Canada?s contributions through the Opportunities Fund for Persons With Disabilities.

The program provides persons with disabilities the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and to develop new skills and abilities.

The resource centre has a longstanding relationship with the Northern Eastern Ontario Regional Alliance for the Disabled (NEORAD). For more information, phone 675-2121.


The lieutenant governor of Ontario has issued an order-in-council appointing Nancy Mongeon as executive director of the Manitoulin-Sudbury Community Care Access Centre (MSCCAC).

Mongeon has been acting as interim executive director for the past year.


From Feb. 25 to April 7, the Sudbury Theatre Centre will be presenting the artwork of Charlie Rapsky in the theatre lobby.
Born in Creighton, Rapsky has been a resident of Sudbury all his life.

This Friday, LaurentianUniversity?s School of Social Work and Midwifery Education Program will host a symposium on anti-discriminatory practice. This event, to be held at the Holiday Inn on Brady Street in Sudbury, will attract about 100 participants, Leading discussions and presenting at the symposium will be Anne Bishop. This author and adult educator has worked as a professional facilitator in adult education, participatory research, community development, diversity education and conflict resolution. She is the co-author of three books on adult education, popular education and participatory research, and author of Becoming an Ally.


In recognition of her many significant contributions to both the Sudbury community and to the chamber of commerce movement local chamber president Debbi Nicholson was presented Feb. 6 with the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal at a ceremony in Mississauga. The president of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Len Crispino made the presentation.


The Greater Sudbury Public Library presents a chat with Victor Sawa at the main public library at 74 Mackenzie St. today (Wednesday) at noon. The maestro is the popular conductor of the Sudbury Symphony and he takes time out from his very busy schedule on the Wednesday before each performance of the symphony to talk up the upcoming presentation. The next SSO concert is this Saturday evening at Fraser Auditorium.
