This news release was issued June 5, 2018, by the NDP on behalf of Sudbury candidate Jamie West and Nickel Belt candidate France Gélinas

SUDBURY – NDP candidates in Northern Ontario said that families that depend on the region’s public sector deserve to know if they will be losing their jobs under Doug Ford’s plan to cut $6 billion from our public services and sell-off our public assets.

“For the men and women who work at jobs that depend on the public sector in Sudbury, Doug Ford owes it to them to be upfront about whether their jobs are part of his $6 billion in cuts to our public services,” said Jamie West NDP candidate for Sudbury.

Doug Ford’s campaign promise is to cut 4 per cent from the Ontario government budget which means a $6 billion cut from public sector funds. If Ford keeps his election promises, that could lead to 135,000 Ontarians losing their jobs, including 97,500 direct jobs in the public sector like nurses and teachers, and 37,500 indirect and induced jobs primarily in the private sector.

• In Sudbury that would mean that 1653 jobs lost.
• In Sault Ste. Marie that would mean 785 jobs lost.
• In North Bay that would mean 518 jobs lost.

“Hundreds of families depend on public sector jobs in Sault Ste. Marie. Doug Ford’s campaign promise to cut billions from our public services is raising a lot of questions about the future and stability of jobs for nurses in our hospital, and for workers across the Sault’s public sector work force,” said Michele McCleave-Kennedy, NDP candidate for Sault Ste. Marie.

“Families in Nipissing who depend on public service jobs don’t have to choose this grave possibility with Doug Ford. Andrea Horwath and the NDP will protect jobs in Nipissing and Northern Ontario, keep the public-sector stable, and work to create good new local jobs,” said Henri Giroux, NDP candidate for Nipissing.

Andrea Horwath and the NDP released their Northern platform in May highlighting six changes for the better to invest in our public services like hospitals and schools, fix winter road maintenance and make it public again, lower hydro and gasoline costs, and establish a government-to-government relationship with First Nations.

The 2018 provincial election will be held on Thursday, June 7.
