New elementary school for Valley East considered

A School Valuation Committee will consider the establishment of a new JK to Grade 8 French Immersion school in the growing community of Valley East. The committee will make its case to the Rainbow District School Board in March 2006.

"Enrolment has increased significantly at Val Caron Public School and Valley View Public School in recent years," said board chair Dena Morrison. "As a result, there is no library or adequate gym facilities at Valley View Public School.

Val Caron Public School has a portable gym and the former gym space at the school is being used for a classroom."

The committee will consider the closure of Val Caron Public School effective June 2007 and the establishment of a new JK to Grade 8 facility on the site of Valley View Public School. Current and projected space needs will be reviewed and recommendations will be made on how to best accommodate students.

Morrison said the board is determined to have the new school up and running in time for the 2007 academic year.

"Maintaining quality facilities is a priority for the Rainbow District School Board. Clean, modern and accessible facilities that provide a positive learning environment for all will be the foundation for the work of the proposed School Valuation Committee," said Morrison.

The committee will be made up of 14 community partners yet to be named.

Parents, guardians and the community at large will have an opportunity to provide input as the consultative process unfolds and will be notified through the school councils as to the time and place of public input sessions.
