New high-voltage power lines being installed in Copper Cliff

Helicopters will transport hydro lines over the highway (MR 55) and brief traffic delays might be experienced

Sudbury motorists travelling along Municipal Road 55 near the highway overpass west of Copper Cliff, might be delayed for brief five-minute periods to allow for hydro line maintenance work. This is expected to happen between now and September 29.

Vale has advised that work is underway to replace older high-voltage lines.

Vale said the disruption will allow for using a helicopter to transport the new power lines across the highway. The work area is in an area of MR55 about one kilometre west of the intersection at Power Street.

Several large new hydro towers are visible on each side of the highway.

A total of four circuits are being installed, each containing several lines. The lines carry 69 KV (69,000V).

This work is to replace old power lines and poles in an effort to upgrade and modernize the infrastructure, said an email from the Vale.

The company said the work would involve low-flying helicopters being visible in the area.

Signs are in place to advise of the upcoming disruption and traffic will be controlled by traffic control personnel, said Vale. Lane restrictions will be in place to minimize the disruptions.
