New Sudbury neighbours 'MacGyver' pothole warning

Neighbours in the Marlborough and Buckingham Drive area of New Sudbury felt the need to come up with their own pothole warning when they say repeated calls to city hall didn't yield quick enough results.

One of those neighbours, Sue Melville, sent a few photos of their temporary solution to NorthernLife.ca today, along with the following message:

“There is a serious accident waiting to happen at the corner of Marlborough and Buckingham Drive in New Sudbury. My neighbours have made several phone calls to the City over the past three weeks and no action has been taken.

“To our knowledge, no one has even shown up to take a look. Well, here you go ... It's so bad that we've had to put a coffee can over a stick in the hole to warn people as they walk, ride or drive by.”

Shannon Dowling from the city's communications department has followed up with NorthernLife.ca about the pothole.

She said the city had placed a warning marker for drivers at the spot several weeks ago, but it appears that marker was stolen. A larger, heavier warning sign will be placed at the spot today, Dowling said.

As for repairing the pothole, she said because it is near a storm sewer, the hole can't simply be filled with material.

"It needs more repair than the average pothole," Dowling said.

The city is aware of the problem, she added, but she was unable to provide a timeframe today for when the pothole will be repaired.
