A woman who was previously the vice-president at the London Health Sciences Centre in southern Ontario is taking on a similar role at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, the largest hospital in Northern Ontario.

Julie Trpkovski has been appointed Vice-President, Medicine and Chief Nursing Executive at HSN, effective May 2.

The appointment was announced in a news release from the hospital on Monday morning. At the same time it was announced that Lisa Smith, who currently fills that role, would be retiring from a distinguished 34-year career at HSN.

The news release said Julie Trpkovski brings 27 years of nursing and health leadership experience to the new role, including 14 years as Director of Critical Care Services Ontario and Vice-President at the Trillium Gift of Life Network and at London Health Sciences Centre.

Dominic Giroux, HSN President and CEO, said he was pleased with the new appointment.

"Ms. Trpkovski was selected from among a competitive pool of 24 candidates by a 10-member selection committee including representation from the HSN board and leadership, union leadership, and patient and family advisors,” he said.

Trpkovski will head up a team of 1,100 people and be responsible for a $153 million budget in Medicine, Critical and Emergency Care, Community Care, Rehabilitation and Nephrology, the North East Specialized Geriatric Services, the Hospitalist program, Patient Flow, Care Transitions and Utilization, said the hospital.

She will also serve as Regional Administrative Lead for Critical Care in the North East and as Advisor to the Health Sciences North Research Institute. As Chief Nursing Executive, she will be a non-voting member of the HSN Board and serve on the Board’s Quality Committee and Medical Advisory Committee, said the release.

HSN said Trpkovski has extensive clinical experience working in hospitals in Canada and the United States, as well as leadership experience with the Ontario Ministry of Health.

In education, Trpkovski completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Windsor, a Masters Certificate in Healthcare Management at the Schulich School of Business at York University and an Executive MBA at the Ivey Business School at Western University.

The hospital news release also included a statement from Giroux expressing best wishes for a wonderful retirement to Lisa Smith, and thanking her for her exceptional contributions to HSN and to health care in Northeastern Ontario throughout her career.
