Starting April 7, waste collection crews will not take garbage that isn't placed in a secure, tied bag. (File)

Beginning  April 7, all garbage must be placed in a secure, tied bag, said the City of Greater Sudbury.

Residents who use garbage containers must place tied bags inside the container. You can use plastic grocery bags, kitchen collector bags or garbage bags inside a container. Garbage containers that contain loose or unbagged waste will not be collected.

While our waste collection crews continue to provide a vital service to the community, it is essential that we limit their contact with personal items and residents, said the city in a press release.

Please continue to place your recyclable items loosely in your Blue Box. Mixed recycling in plastic bags will not be collected.

Reminders:

  • While the landfill sites are closed, you are permitted up to four bags/containers per week (maximum 18kg/40lb each).
  • It is still important not to overload collection crews unnecessarily. They keep working for all of our benefit. Please only use the increase in the bag allowance for essential garbage during this time.
  • Don't forget that Blue Box recycling and Green Cart organic collection remain unlimited and represent the majority of in-home waste.
  • Bring your waste to the road before the collection crew arrives. Do not meet the crew at the road. This ensures proper physical distancing measures for residents and crews.
  • Place facial tissues and paper towels in a securely tied certified compostable bag in your Green Cart, not in the Blue Box.
  • Disinfecting wipes, personal wipes, medical masks and gloves are not compostable or recyclable. Put them in a tied garbage bag to ensure the safety of our crews.
  • Please postpone requests for scheduled pickup of large furniture, appliances and electronic items if possible.
