Ontario confirms 28 deaths, 1,210 new COVID cases today

The province also reported a decrease in the number of COVID patients hospitalized but an increase in patients admitted to intensive care and on ventilators

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,210 new cases of COVID-19 today and reported 28 deaths and 1,376 recoveries. 

The deaths reported today include one person between the ages of 40 and 59 years old, seven people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and 20 people over the age of 80 years old. 

There were 62 people hospitalized with the coronavirus since yesterday's report.

Both the number of active cases and the number of people currently hospitalized has decreased from yesterday, but the number of patients on ventilators and in intensive care units has increased. 

There are 12,628 active, lab-confirmed cases (down from 12,822 yesterday), and of those 526 are hospitalized, down from 535 yesterday. There are 146 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 127 yesterday) and 88 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 78 yesterday).

Of the cases reported by the province today, 346 are from Toronto, 361 are from Peel, and 143 are from York Region. 

Ontario confirmed 91 school-related cases, including 75 students and 16 staff. There were 10 new cases reported in licensed child care settings.

Public health labs processed 41,838 tests since last report resulting in a 4.1 per cent positivity rate. 

To date the province has confirmed 99,372 COVID-19 cases and reported 83,301 recoveries and 3,443 deaths. 

In Northern Ontario, all but one of the health unit regions are currently classified as green under the province’s new regional restrictions. It means the areas are permitted the broadest allowance of Stage 3 activities.

The exception is Public Health Sudbury and District, which is in the yellow (protect) restriction level.

There are 100 known active cases in the north. More than half are in the Thunder Bay area.

The breakdown of Public Health Ontario data for the rate of cases for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 58 cases, rate of 50.7 per 100,000 people. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 15.

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 58 cases, rate of 44.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 58 cases. There are seven known active cases, two of which are in hospital. The last cases were reported Nov. 18.

  • Porcupine Health Unit: 105, rate of 125.8 per 100,000 people. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 19.

  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 211 cases, rate of 106 per 100,000 people. There are 22 known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 19.

  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000 people. There is one known active case. The last case was reported Nov. 15.

  • Northwestern Health Unit: 90 cases, rate of 102.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 92 confirmed cases and two probable cases. There are 10 known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 18.

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 192 cases, rate of 128 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 189 cases. There are 52 known active cases. The last cases were reported Nov. 18.

The Ontario rate of infection is 668.5.
