The Ontario government is investing close to $59 million as part of a five-year $1.8 billion expansion plan that will advance the four-laning of Highway 69 south of Sudbury.

The announcement was made July 21 at a press conference hosted by Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci.

The project involves constructing almost nine kilometers of a new four-lane route east of the existing highway, south of Sudbury to Highway 537.

The project will also include the construction of three new structures, the re-routing of about three kilometres of Highway 537 and construction of an interchange at the new intersection of Highways 537 and 69.

The project will tie in with the recently completed underpass at Old Wanup Rd. and the new interchange at the south end of the existing four-lane alignment south of Sudbury.

The contract tender in the amount of $58,648,122, awarded to Pioneer Construction of Sudbury, is the largest in the company’s history. This project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2009.
