Ontario reporting 538 new COVID-19 cases, 162 hospitalizations

Ontario reported 538 new cases of COVID-19 today. The province is also reporting three new deaths due to the illness.

The majority of the new cases are in four regions: 229 being reported in Toronto; 101 cases being reported in the Peel Region;  66 cases being reported in Ottawa, and; 43 cases being reported in the York Region.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said of the new cases, 60 per cent are among people under age 40.

As well, 162 people are currently in hospital from COVID-19. Of those, 36 are in intensive care units.

In total as of today, Ontario has had 52,248 COVID-19 cases, with 2,851 deaths.

The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 32 cases, rate of 28 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 40 cases, rate of 29.3 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 83, rate of 99.5 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 108 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 population. There are six known active cases.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 56 cases, rate of 58.2 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 51 cases and one probable case. There are six known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 107 cases, rate of 70.7 per 100,000. There are three known active cases.

In northeastern Ontario, there have been 277 cases and the rate of infection is 48.8 per 100,000. The Ontario rate of infection is 347.9.

The province conducted 39,646 tests since the last daily report.
