Ontario reports a steep jump in COVID-19 related deaths, drop in cases

There were significantly more COVID-19 related deaths reported by Ontario public health units Wednesday than that logged days prior, and slightly fewer cases than yesterday's spike. 

Included in this latest update were 390 new cases, 292 resolutions, 43 deaths, and 7,382 tests. 

One of these new cases was reported by the Northwestern Health Unit along with two recoveries by the Porcupine Health Unit, and one by the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

Northern Ontario now has 22 active cases with this update, following 253 resolutions, and 10 deaths. A total of 38,397 tests were performed in the region to determine these findings, of which Public Health Sudbury and District (PHSD) conducted 9,730.

PHSD has confirmed 64 cases in the area with these results, 59 of whom have recovered and two that have died. Included in these statistics are four active cases at three long-term care (LTC) homes in the area at Finlandia Village Nursing Home, Elizabeth Centre and the Manitoulin Lodge. 

Health Sciences North currently has one of the districts' five confirmed cases in its care, as well as one unconfirmed case in its Intensive Care Unit and six more in other departments. 

Provincewide there are now 3,622 active cases of the 23,774 confirmed to date, following 18,190 resolutions and 1,962 deaths. A total of 567,176 tests have been conducted in Ontario towards these findings, of which 4,444 are pending results. 

Among these active cases are 991 whose condition has required them to be hospitalized, including 160 in the ICU and 120 in the ICU on a ventilator. 

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care reported four more LTC outbreaks contributing to these Ontario-wide statistics, bringing the total number of events reported to 284. There are now 183 active outbreaks following the resolution of 100, where 2,563 LTC residents and patients are fighting the virus as well as 1,611 LTC staff. 

Since the pandemic began, 4,518 LTC residents and patients have tested positive for COVID-19 along with 1,573 LTC health care workers, leading to the deaths of 1,224 residents or patients and four LTC health care workers. 

These numbers are part of a nationwide total of 79,492 confirmed and 11 presumptive cases of COVID-19 reported as of May 20 at 12:49 p.m., along with 40,358 resolutions and 5,956 deaths.
