Ontario reports record 10,436 new COVID cases Wednesday

The latest updates also include 3,832 recoveries and three deaths

Public Health Ontario is reporting a record 10,436 new COVID cases today.

The latest updates also include 3,832 recoveries and three deaths.

The Dec. 29 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

  • There are 76,992 active cases, up from 70,391.
  • 726 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Included in today's report are 1,514 unvaccinated cases, 425 partially vaccinated cases, and 8,221 fully vaccinated cases. 276 cases were reported with vaccination status unknown. 
  • The seven-day average by vaccination status indicated 49.9 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, 52.43 cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 63.92 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people. 
  • 190 people are in ICU due to COVID-19. Of those, 176 people are testing positive and 14 are testing negative. There are 104 people in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to COVID on a ventilator.
  • Among the hospitalized cases (not in the ICU) are 150 unvaccinated people, 186 fully vaccinated people, and nine partially vaccinated people. 
  • In the ICU there are 70 unvaccinated cases, 35 fully vaccinated cases, and two partially vaccinated cases.
  • 11.4 million people in Ontario (77 per cent of the population) are fully vaccinated, and five per cent of the province has one dose of COVID vaccine.
  • 3.2 million people in Ontario have received a third dose of COVID vaccine. 
  • The province reported 59,259 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 26.9 per cent positivity rate, the highest ever recorded during the pandemic.
  • Today's new cases include 325 children under five, 703 kids ages five to 11 years old, 1,126 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 4,525 people between 20 and 39 years old, 2,698 people between 40 and 59 years old, 896 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 156 people over 80 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 725,841 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 638,678 recoveries and 10,171 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 4,926.3 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average seven-day incidence rate from Dec. 19 to Dec. 25 was 345.5 cases per 100,000 people, which increased 140.6 per cent over to the seven-day period starting on Dec. 13.

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 1,852 cases, weekly rate of 124.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,858 cases. There are 264 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 80 per cent have both doses.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 1,331 cases, weekly rate of 157.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,106 cases. There are 116 known active cases. Its dashboard has not been updated since Dec. 23. Of the eligible population five years and older, 84 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 79 per cent have both doses.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,728 cases, weekly rate of 274.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,695 cases. The known active cases have not been updated since Dec. 24. Of the eligible population five years and older, 85 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 78 per cent have both doses.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 5,042 cases, weekly rate of 166.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 5,118 cases. There are 531 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 81 per cent have both doses.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 551 cases, weekly rate of 132.8 cases per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 573. There are 81 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 83 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 78 per cent have both doses.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,595 cases, weekly rate of 205.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,631 cases. There are 220 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 93 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 84 per cent have both doses.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 4,036 cases, weekly rate of 78.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,996 cases. There are 153 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 87 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 81 per cent have both doses.
