Patios are open for business, and Sudburians are pretty happy about it

‘It has been a long time, and we’re a little emotional, but we’re very glad to welcome our customers back’

Not even threatening skies could stop some Sudburians from getting out and enjoying their favourite patios today.

Sudbury.com took a stroll through downtown to speak with folks enjoying patios and chat with some of the purveyors of those patios.

Patios are part of the first step of Ontario’s reopening plan, albeit, with some restrictions still in place. For example, restaurants will only be able to serve up to four people per table for patio dining.

Kendra MacIsaac, vice-president of Health and Wellness at YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, as well as co-chair of the board for Downtown Sudbury BIA, was joined by Helen Francis, president and CEO of YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, and Nancy Dubé on the patio at La Fromagerie.

“It feels great, and it’s great to see so many of the businesses downtown take advantage of the patio program and opening back up today,” said MacIsaac.

MacIsaac is referring to Downtown Sudbury BIA’s cash-back rebate program that offers up to 75 per cent of their members’ total costs to a maximum of $7,500 for construction, heating, lighting or furniture expenses.

“We have been fully vaccinated, and we’re hoping everyone continues to get their vaccinations so we can enjoy this without any more waves,” said Francis.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away, at Station 84, Bev Miller and Wayne Penton were enjoying a beverage. They are patio regulars at Station 84 and were happy to be able to enjoy it once again.

“We missed it,” said Penton. “I was beginning to think I lived in a cave.”

Ania Derecka, owner of Studio 35, was taking advantage of a break in the afternoon to enjoy some food and drink at the patio set up outside her Durham Street shop.

The patio belongs to The Alibi Room right next door, she said.

“We’re lucky to have this patio right in front of us, it’s really nice,” she said.

As for being able to open her shop once again, Derecka said she’s “super excited.”

“It has been a long time, and we’re a little emotional, but we’re very glad to welcome our customers back into our store,” she said.

Chris Gainer, of Peddler’s Pub, was sitting with some friends outside the restaurant Friday afternoon. He was pleased with the turnout on the first day he was allowed to open the patio.

Gainer said Peddler’s has had a patio for at least 10 years, and this year it is the biggest it has ever been. He hopes to see more familiar faces all summer long.
