Lively District Secondary school students Robyn Barrett (left), Stephen Matthews (centre) and Jamie Johansen hold up a cheque for $5,000 for North Shore Search and Rescue. Grade 10 students participated in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). Students were asked to work in groups to research local charities that give back to the community. This included interviews with charity workers. One group of students from each class was chosen to conduct a final presentation in front of the entire school and a judging panel. The 10-minute presentations included how a grant would help it achieve its mission and better serve its clients. Other charities competing for the donation was Northern Cancer Foundation, Ten Rainbows Children's Foundation and Operation Red Nose. The money was donated by YPI, which is an award-winning high school program that asks students to research social issues and learn about community-based charities.
