Thousands of Sudbury area residents took advantage of the amazing weather this weekend to to make the drive out to Ester Road to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sudbury Greek Festival.
All the events are happening at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the adjacent Hellenic Centre.
The full festival with all the celebrations is back after three years of pandemic precautions. Toula Sakellaris, a member of the organization group, said she couldn't be happier.
"Oh yes and we appreciate it. It's like everyone in Sudbury is here and we are so happy to see the people come back," she said.
Sakellaris was standing beside a long line of local residents who dropped in to order full take out meals that included such favourites as pork souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, moussaka dinner, vegetarian spanakopita and of course huge portions of Greek salad. Many of the buyers took their dinners to a nearby table or to the big tent outside where entertainers were performing.
Sakellaris said the Greek community is always pleased to get together to see friends and family members and the celebration with food and drink is a big part of that.
She said there was an especially big demand for Greek desserts which was such that there was one whole serving section dedicated to providing desserts and traditional coffee.
The crowd was also pleased to see dance demonstrations that featured both local dancers and professional dancers from the Toronto area. The Levendia=X-Hellenic Folklore Association was the main dance group that pleased the crowd.
The festival continues Sunday with the doors opening at the Hellenic centre at noon. The day will feature more music performers, more dancing demonstration, and plenty of food.
