Police Service Board chair RonDupuis announced today that Insp. Dan Markiewich has been appointed acting chief of the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS).

The appointment is effective following a swearing-in ceremony Dec. 11. The appointment is necessary following the departure of current chief, Frank Elsner, who is soon to become the chief constable of the Victoria Police Department in B.C.

Markiewich has more than 30 years in policing under his belt and has held the rank of inspector since April 1998. He's served as divisional commander of the Uniform Division, Criminal Investigations Division and Organizational Support, as well as his current role as inspector in charge of Emergency Operations.

In a news release, Dupuis said Markiewich's “community-mindedness” reflects positively on the GSPS.

“Throughout his career, Inspector Markiewich has represented our service at countless community events such as McDonald's McHappy Day, Tim Horton’s Camp Day, Easter Seals Telethon, and the Cops, Coffee and Kids program,” he said.

Markiewich said he is humbled by the appointment.

“I would like to thank the board for their confidence in me and am honoured to be assuming this post,” he said. “I am committed to continue to move forward the Future of Policing agenda that has been set by the board and Chief Elsner. Our community is recognized for its leadership in embracing community partnerships in ensuring safety for all.”
