With November just around the corner, poppies go on sale today at various locations around Greater Sudbury.

The Legion flag will also be raised at Tom Davies Square this morning.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign generates funds that help support many charitable causes in Greater Sudbury and beyond.

The Dr. Fred Starr Branch 76 Legion alone has generated some $46,000 through poppy sales. That money has supported the Sam Bruno PET Scan Fund, Maison Vale Hospice, the Northern Cancer Centre, Meals on Wheels and the Finlandia Seniors Fitness Complex.

Money brought in through poppy sales has allowed Branch 76 to support other causes, like the Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief Fund, as well.

And that’s just one local Legion branch. There are five other Legion branches (Falconbridge, Chelmsford, Onaping, Capreol and Lockerby) in the city doing similar charity work.

Starting today and going until tomorrow, look for Legionnaires poppy canvassing at the following locations:

  • Beer Stores
  • LCBO Stores
  • Canadian Tire
  • Walmart
  • Real Canadian Superstore
  • Dumas Independent Grocer
  • Lowes
  • Home Depot
  • Sears
  • Shopper's Drug Mart

In addition, Legionnaires will be at Costco on Nov. 4, Nov. 5 and Nov. 6.

You can also find poppy collection boxes at hundreds of local businesses across Greater Sudbury between today and Nov. 11, Remembrance Day.
