The countdown is on for the Miner's Mayhem.

While Miner's Mayhem doesn't actually happen until June 18 at Adanac Ski Hill, this weekend marks the beginning of the early bird registration period.

On Saturday and Sunday, at Adventure365 Ski and Cycle at 444 Barrydowne Rd. (the event's title sponsor), anyone wishing to get a cheaper price for their registration may do.

That's when the cost of registration will drop to $55 per person. After Sunday at midnight, the cost goes up to $65 per person until May 30, when the cost goes up again, to $75. Registration will close June 15 at 11:59 p.m.

And, just like every other year, proceeds raised through Miner's Mayhem will be donated to a local charity. This year, the committee has chosen the Rich Griffin #1Saves8 campaign.

“We are truly honoured to be chosen as the 2016 charitable recipient,” said Angela Gemmill, speaking on behalf of Nancy Griffin, whose husband, Rich Griffin, passed away suddenly in May 2015. He was an organ donor, and he helped save the lives of eight other people.

“Funds raised will go to Northern Ontario transplant patients and their families. These families can incur tens of thousands of dollars in uncovered expenses while a loved on waits for a transplant and during post-transplant care.”

Rich Griffin participated in the Miner's Mayhem two years ago. His wife, Nancy, participated last year.

Miner's Mayhem is a physical challenge for individuals and groups, and includes a 6.5-km trail and hill run with various obstacles to navigate along the way.

Again this year, the Miners' Mayhem will incorporate a team aspect, said race director Donna Smrek. It has a “no miner is left behind” attitude, and team members start and finish the race together.

Last year, close to 600 people tackled the Miner's Mayhem obstacle course. This year, Smrek said she is hoping for between 750 and 800 participants.

Further details and registration are now available online at theminersmayhem.com. The first 200 people who register prior to the early bird deadline of March 13 will get a free two-week Miner's Mayhem training bootcamp.
