Ontario said it is spending $730,000 for Cambrian College and NOSM University to provide upgraded equipment and infrastructure to help ensure those schools have the most modern equipment and learning tools "so students receive the high-quality education and training they need to succeed in the workforce.”
Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli, who is also the Ontario minister for economic development and job creation, made the announcement March 22
“This support will ensure students at Cambrian College, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University’s Sudbury campus have access to the latest instructional tools and equipment to meet business and industry standards,” said MPP Vic Fedeli.
“By investing in the renewal and modernization of post-secondary infrastructure, we are supporting the growth of the economy right here in Sudbury and ensuring students get the knowledge and skills they need to get good-paying jobs.”
As part of Fedeli's announcement, Cambrian College will receive $675,000 for its Power (operating) Engineering Lab – Boiler Modernization. In addition, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University Sudbury campus will receive $55,000 for their clinical skills training and audio equipment upgrade.
Cambrian's boiler modernization will see the replacement of an older tube boiler that is 35 years old and has outlived the capacity to be repaired. Cambrian seeks to purchase a new electric boiler for a low-carbon modernization of the lab.
At NOSM U, the plan is to replace audio equipment used to observe and assess simulated clinical medical skills at the Sudbury campus.
Jill Dunlop, Ontario's Minister of Colleges and Universities, said it is essential that Ontario students have the most modern tools and equipment they need to learn the skills they need for the future.
“Our government’s investments to build Ontario will not only help colleges and universities renew and modernize their facilities, it will also help ensure that they can continue to provide students with applied, career-focused education and training that meets the labour needs of key sectors driving our economy,” said Dunlop.
The funding announcement followed the release of the Ontario government spending budget last week which included:
-Ontario investing $209 million in 2022-23 to help publicly assisted colleges and universities provide a modern and safe learning environment for students, faculty and staff.
-$179 million will be provided through the Facilities Renewal Program in 2022-23 to help colleges and universities with the critical maintenance, repairs, upgrades and renewal of existing facilities.
-$20 million will be provided through the College Equipment and Renewal Fund in 2022-23 to help colleges buy and renew instructional equipment and learning resources.
