Public Health Sudbury & Districts (PHSD) has reported five new cases of COVID-19 in the local jurisdiction for Aug. 6. The health unit is also reporting there are now 10 active cases being monitored.

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 17 months ago, there have been 2,193 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,183 of those cases are now resolved.

There are also now 1,001 cases that are "confirmed or presumed to be" for variants of concern. This is an increase of two cases over Thursday's report.

The details were outlined on the PHSD website.

In terms of where the new cases might have occurred, PHSD said there were four new cases in the Manitoulin district, and one new case in the Greater Sudbury area.

With respect to the possible causes, HSD reported three new cases that were associated with an outbreak, one case related to close contact of a confirmed case, one case that was travel related and one new case under investigation.

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 720 total cases (an increase of one).

The next highest group number was 551 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (an increase of four).

The next highest number was 524 cases for the 19 and under age group (no increase).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 303 cases total (no increase).

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 95 cases (no increase).

The numbers above might not correspond to other numbers being reported because the health unit does report fresh numbers every day.

With respect to COVID-19 testing,  270,365 tests have been performed in the PHSD region, an increase of 364 since the last testing results on Thursday.

As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a cumulative total of 236,907 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area. There are also 106,579 local residents who are now fully vaccinated.

The health unit webpage has reported there are no current outbreaks declared in any local settings. However, a COVID-19 outbreak was declared on Wednesday at the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, by members of the local pandemic crisis team. That outbreak is still regarded as active by the local health centre on the Island.

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 5, there are two patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. Both patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this there are nine admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. HSN said one of the patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time.

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 340 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 18 new deaths** had occurred in the past 24 hours. **NOTE: Public Health Ontario reports 16 of the deaths are related to cases from more than six weeks ago, which were updated based on data cleaning. This includes one death in an individual under the age of 19.
