Public Health Sudbury reports four new COVID-19 cases for Aug. 18

There are now 26 active cases being monitored by local health officials in the Sudbury District

Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported four new cases of COVID-19 in the local jurisdiction for Aug. 18. The health unit is also reporting there are now 26 active cases being monitored. 

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 17 months ago, there have been 2,231 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,205 of those cases are now resolved. 

There are also now 1,031 cases that are "confirmed or presumed to be" positive for variants of concern. This shows no change in the past 24 hours. The details were outlined on the PHSD website.

As for the possible location of new cases, four cases were reported to have occurred in Greater Sudbury. 

With respect to the possible causes of recent cases, PHSD reported there were three cases related to an outbreak and one case that was travel related. 

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected. 

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 733 total cases (An increase of five).

The next highest group number was 560 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (An increase of one).

The next highest number was 534 cases for the 19 and under age group (An increase of one).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 305 cases total (No increase). 

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 96 cases (No increase).

There was a decrease of three cases in the "not specified" category, which is currently at zero. 

The numbers above might not correspond to other numbers being reported because the health unit does report fresh numbers daily, as they happen. Some of the numbers are delayed.

With respect to COVID-19 testing, 276,879  tests have been performed in the PHSD region; an increase of 488 since the last testing results on Monday. With respect to new vaccinations, the health unit reported total accumulated vaccinations of 241,664. The number of people in the area totally vaccinated is now at 110,053.

The health unit webpage has also reported there is a current active COVID-19 current outbreak on Manitoulin Island at the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 18 there are three patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. Two of those patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this there are two admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. HSN said none of those patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time. 

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 485 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported three deaths had occurred in the past 24 hours.
