Radar speed signs will be installed in New Sudbury near St. Andrew the Apostle Church and between 1333 and 1339 Barrydowne Rd.
The move comes in response to ongoing speeding and safety concerns along Barrydowne Road, north of Lasalle Boulevard.
Councillors Joscelyne Landry-Altmann and Al Sizer formed a safety committee consisting of city councillors, city staff and representatives from the Greater Sudbury Police Services to review concerns expressed by area residents.
One of the recommendations from the group was to install radar speed signs near St. Andrew the Apostle Church and between 1333 and 1339 Barrydowne Rd.
The signs are equipped with a radar speed detector and an LED display.
As vehicles approach the sign, the speed of the vehicle is measured and if the speed exceeds the set threshold, the sign will illuminate to show the driver that the maximum speed limit is 50 km/h and ask them to slow down.
In addition, the signs record the speed of each vehicle which approaches it. This data will allow the committee to track the impact of the signs and the impact of any future initiatives that occur in the area.
“Speeding along this corridor has been a longstanding issue which has lead to a number of accidents, private property damage and pedestrian safety concerns,” said Landry-Altmann.
Councillor Sizer echoed the concerns of his colleague and area residents.
“These radar speed signs have been used on various roads throughout the city of Greater Sudbury and have shown to be effective in reducing the overall operating speeds of vehicles along these roads,” said Sizer.
“We are optimistic that this pilot project will address concerns, reduce speeding and resulting accidents, and increase driver awareness as well as pedestrian and driver safety.”
