Rainbow's parent councils receive nearly $12K in grants

Innovative parent involvement projects are being implemented in Rainbow schools thanks to funding provided by the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office. 

Thirteen Rainbow schools will share a total of $11,740 in Parents Reaching Out Grants to support school council initiatives to further engage parents/guardians in their child’s learning.

Rainbow District School Board’s Parent Involvement Committee has also received a Parents Reaching Out regional grant to host an engaging speaker on resiliency and well-being.

A.B. Ellis Public School
School Information Evening

The school will host a Family Information Night at Shawanosowe School for Grade 6 students transitioning to Grade 7 at A.B. Ellis Public School. Parents/guardians will receive information about the programs offered to help ensure a smooth transition for students from Whitefish River First Nation.

Assiginack Public School
Math Festivities

Assiginack Public School will host a family fun evening of math games and activities to increase parent engagement and exposure to math and promote a growth mindset. Resources will be made available for students and parents/guardians to learn and enjoy math at home.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Family Math Night

Family Math Night will be an opportunity for parents and guardians to gain first-hand experience with current math techniques being used in their child's classroom. Families will leave with 'math bags' that will allow them to continue this fun learning at home.

Chelmsford Public School
Literacy Café

At the Literacy Café, families will explore new reading genres and the importance of literacy at school and at home. Parents/guardians will engage in activities related to reading and writing to support student achievement. 

Confederation Secondary School
Mental Health Initiative - Jack.org

Confederation Secondary School will bring Jack.org to Sudbury. With a vision of “No More Silence,” Jack.org is the only national network of young leaders working to transform the traditional approaches of dealing with mental health. Students will spearhead organizational meetings and guide advocacy to help students in need feel included and cope safely.

Ernie Checkeris Public School
Family Math Night

Family Math Night will be an opportunity for parents and guardians to gain first-hand experience with current math techniques being used in their child's classroom. Families will leave with 'math bags' that will allow them to continue this fun learning at home.

Lansdowne Public School
Family Connections Strategy

In an effort to encourage family participation in learning, the Family Connections Strategy offers childcare and transportation to families during school events throughout the year. In addition, math games were introduced during a Family Math evening. For additional support, math games and resources are available for students to take home. 

Lasalle Secondary School
Parent Approved, Second to None!

A video called Parent Approved, Second to None! will highlight the various academic, athletic, artistic and social benefits that Lasalle Secondary School offers to students.

Little Current Public School
Math Fair

Families will enjoy a variety of math technology and board games that complement the math curriculum at all grade levels. The games will be available to loan and will provide parents/guardians with the opportunity to help their children with math at home, in a fun and engaging way.

MacLeod Public School
Multicultural Literacy

To embrace the rich diversity that exists at MacLeod Public School, children’s books will be purchased for the school’s library in a variety of languages. As a culture sharing exercise, international students will be invited to read from these books to their classes in their mother tongue. 

Monetville Public School
Fuel It Up Family Night

The school will host a Family Physical Activity evening. Staff from the Sudbury & District Health Unit will prepare healthy snacks and share recipes. Representatives from Our Children, Our Future will promote family activities available in the community. 

S. Geiger Public School
Workshop: Promoting Creative Thinking 

Families were invited to a grand opening of the school’s new Imagination Station, a space where students can think, plan, design, and create. Families were engaged with their children in a “Rube Goldberg” challenge to demonstrate the design process and the integration of technology to support innovation.

Webbwood Public School
Interdisciplinary Community Engagement

Webbwood Public School will undertake an interdisciplinary community project that highlights literacy, local history, local geography, and visual arts. Staff will work with students to build understanding and a local First Nations artist will guide families to produce unique artwork.
