Rate of new COVID-19 cases falling, testing rising provincewide

Ontario public health units logged 294 new cases of COVID-19 since Saturday, in what stands as the lowest daily increase since March 31. 

The presumed recoveries of 389 individuals were also reported with this latest update, along with the deaths of 35 and testing of 17,618.

Three of these cases were found in Northern Ontario, bringing the total number of cases confirmed in the region to 272, including 226 resolutions and 8 deaths, following the testing of 30,012. 

One of these new cases was found in Sudbury's Finlandia Village Nursing Home, another at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, and the last near Thunder Bay. 

There are now 3,832 active cases in the province of the 20,238 confirmed through the testing of 433,994, following 14,772 resolutions and 1,684 deaths. 

Of these active cases, 961 are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, including 195 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 140 in the ICU on a ventilator. 

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has declared 172 active outbreaks at long-term care (LTC) homes contributing to this total, after two more were declared and five more resolved since Saturday. These outbreaks have been linked to 2,727 active cases among LTC residents or patients as well as 1,693 among LTC staff. 

Since the pandemic began, the virus has taken the lives of 1,235 LTC residents or patients and less than five LTC employees. 

There are currently four active LTC outbreaks in the Sudbury area following the most recent at Finlandia Village Nursing Home Saturday, following the resolution of one. 

Public Health Sudbury and Districts have confirmed 61 cases to date, of which 52 have presumably recovered and two have died, following the testing of 8,425. 

Health Sciences North has one of these confirmed cases and two unconfirmed cases in its ICU, as well as four unconfirmed cases in other departments, as reported on May 8 at 12 p.m. 

Across the nation, 68,741 confirmed and 11 presumptive cases have been reported, including 31,924 resolutions and 4,870 deaths, as of May 10 at 4:23 p.m. 

Internationally, a total of 3,925,815 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed and 274,488 related deaths by 215 countries, areas, and territories, as of May 10 at 5:43 p.m.
