RBC Financial Group presented the Sisu: Assisted Living for Sudbury’s Seniors Capital Campaign with a $50,000 donation July 27.

The gift will assist in the development of the RBC Historical Trail, a 2.5-km walking trail, which will run through and around the 42-acre property at Finlandia Village.

The trail will feature historical plaques, which chronicle the people and events that made Finlandia Village what it is today.

“RBC recognizes the importance of active living for community members of all ages,” Bill Bray, RBC regional vice-president, Northern Lakes, said in a press release.

“Through this donation, we are so pleased to help enrich the lives of seniors by providing opportunity for physical, psychological and social enjoyment.”

A significant element of the project is the Oliver G. Korpela Wellness Centre, which will be housed in the new Lepokoti Assisted Living Residence.

With a focus on keeping seniors healthy and active, the trail will be another tool in accomplishing that goal.

“Many of the residents walk daily, even in inclement weather,” Brian Koivu, president of the Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society, said.

“Walking is a very valuable fitness tool whether your age is eight or 80. The RBC Trail will not only contribute to overall wellness, it will tell an important story.”

The RBC Wellness Trail will also feature benches and trees, which have been dedicated in celebration and memory.

“RBC Financial Group truly is a ‘trailblazer’ in this campaign,” said Gerry Lougheed, Jr., chair of the Sisu Campaign.

“Quite simply, they get it. Affordable assisted living is the future of senior care, and today RBC has emerged as a leader in ensuring that our seniors have unparalleled quality of care, and quality of life.”

The Sisu Campaign is focused on raising $3 million to build Lepokoti, a new, affordable seniors’ assisted living residence, and the Oliver G. Korpela Wellness Centre at Finlandia Village. The project is nearing completion and scheduled to open in early October.
