The Municipality of Red Lake issued a news release Saturday advising that efforts will be underway soon enough to bring residents of that community back home now that the RED49 forest fire is under control.

"We have received positive reports from the MNRF (Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry) with regards to the status of RED49. The fire is now 100 per cent contained," said a statement from the municipality earlier this afternoon.

The fire began last Monday and by Friday night had grown to more than 500 hectares, coming as close as two kilometres to built up areas of the gold mining town of about 4,100 in Northwestern Ontario. There was heavy smoke throughout the town for most of the week. MNRF staff said a rainfall that occurred Thursday made a significant difference in being able to bring the blaze under control.

Most of the community residents were moved out earlier this week as a precaution. People went to such communities as Dryden, Thunder Bay and even to Winnipeg.

"We thank all those essential services for their tremendous work! The MNRF Fire Fighters, Volunteer Fire Fighters as well as all other essential services who remained in the community to ensure the safety and well-being of our community and residents," said the statement from the municipality.

At some point soon, municipal officials expect to be giving permission for evacuees to return home, but it is not happening yet.

"Crews are in the process of restoring critical infrastructure (Natural Gas) in order to first get our Hospital running at full capacity. Further, other essential services need to be restored such as grocery stores, gas stations, etc." said the statement from the town.

In a message on Facebook, residents were reminded there is still a travel ban in place until further notice and no person (other than essential personnel) shall enter the community and surrounding areas without a travel permit. To obtain a travel permit, residents are asked to telephone (807) 727-1349, (807) 727-1338 (807) 727-1333. Residents were advised to keep checking the Municipality of Red Lake Facebook page.
