Region hasn't had a new COVID-19 case in more than two weeks

Only four known active cases in the North; province reports 404 new cases of COVID-19 as of today and 10 deaths

Ontario’s daily COVID-19 case increase is back into the 400s today with 404 new cases reported, which is a 1.5 per cent increase in the total number of cases confirmed in the province.

Last week on Monday (May 25) the province also reported 404 new cases, the fifth in a five-day run of daily increases in the 400s. However, since then daily increases have ranged between 287 and 383 new cases. This is the first day since last Monday the province is reporting an increase in the 400s.

Public Health Ontario is also reporting ten deaths today, including two people between the ages of 40 and 59, seven people between the ages of 60 and 79, and one person over the age of 80.

The province’s public health agency has now reported 2,276 deaths attributed to COVID-19, but the Ministry of Long-Term Care has reported more deaths than are included in the public health report.

The ministry has confirmed 1,648 deaths of residents of long-term care homes and seven staff deaths. The daily epidemiological summaries from Public Health Ontario only include 1,445 resident deaths and six staff deaths.

The ministry reports there are 112 long-term care homes with ongoing outbreaks and 184 homes with resolved outbreaks.

Public Health Ontario confirmed there are also 90 ongoing outbreaks in retirement homes and 47 outbreaks at hospitals. There are another 54 retirement homes with resolved outbreaks and 37 hospitals with resolved outbreaks.

The ministry uses information reported directly from long-term care homes, whereas Public Health Ontario gets its information as it is reported by the regional public health units.

There have been 28,263 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ontario, and 22,153 people (78.4 per cent) are now reported recovered.

A case is reported as recovered once 14 days have passed since symptom onset and the person is not hospitalized.

There are 781 people hospitalized in the province, including 125 in intensive care units and 89 patients on ventilators.

Public Health Ontario reports there were 14,379 tests processed since the last update.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 77.9 per 100,000 people.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to May 31 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from the each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 21 cases, rate of 18.4 per 100,000 population. The last positive test was confirmed May 23. All of the known cases are resolved.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 25 cases, rate of 19.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 27 cases, the last of which was reported May 18. Of those, 23 are resolved and there has been one virus-related death.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population. The last confirmed case was May 10. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and seven people have died. There is still one known active case of the virus.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 64 cases, rate of 31.2 per 100,000 population. This health unit has reported 64 confirmed cases. The last positive test was reported May 14. Two people have died, and the rest of the known cases are resolved.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 81 cases, rate of 54 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 82 confirmed cases. Of those, 79 are resolved and one person has died. There are two known active cases, both of which are hospitalized.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 22 cases, rate of 25.1  per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 21 cases, with 20 of them being resolved.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 190.1.
