Greater Sudbury Police said in an email to Sudbury.com they received a call around 9:30 p.m. Aug. 19 "in which the caller described what sounded like 'explosions' in the area of O’Neil Drive West in Garson. It has been confirmed that the sounds were in fact not explosions, and were likely to be fireworks."

Original story:

Residents have been reporting noises they likened to “explosion sounds” lasting about an hour on Saturday night.

We’ve received reports of the noises from a reader, who pointed us to the Garson-Falconbridge Community Action Network Facebook page, where residents are also talking about the happening,

Some thought it was fireworks, while others thought maybe the noises were linked to the Dyno Nobel explosives plant in Garson.

The source of the noises remains unclear at this time.

Besides the Garson area, people living in Valley East, Minnow Lake and New Sudbury all reported the same phenomenon.

Sudbury.com was able to reach Greater Sudbury Fire Services Deputy Chief Jesse Oshell, who confirmed fire officials were called out to Dyno Nobel last night around 9:35 p.m. as a result of resident complaints, but the plant was not the source of the noises.

“We did have calls come in about reports of potential explosions, but the Dyno Nobel facility was responded to, inspected, and no incident was found there,” he said.

“So it was not related to anything industrial or explosive at the facility. Everything was safe.”

Oshell said the fire services passed along the information it had gathered to Greater Sudbury Police Services.

Sudbury.com has reached out to Greater Sudbury Police regarding this matter, but as of this article’s publication, we had not heard back. This article will be updated when we receive any further information.
