ItÂ?s a new year and the Sudbury and District Health Unit is looking for new Eat Smart! restaurants.

Eat Smart! is a province-wide program that awards restaurants for meeting high standards in food safety, healthier menu choices, and smoke-free seating for their patrons.

Â?Canadians in general want to eat healthier meals, but our hectic lifestyles often make this a real challenge,Â? said public health dietician Tammy Cheguis.

Â?ThatÂ?s why we want as many restaurants as possible in the Sudbury Manitoulin districts to fill that need.Â?

Public health inspectors check out all Eat Smart! restaurants to ensure program standards are met.

Â?Smoke-free, clean restaurants that offer healthy food choices and have staff trained in safe food handling procedures are the ultimate Eat Smart! goals,Â? said health unit environmental support officer Ed Wierzbicki.

Free publicity consultations, displays and an annual awards ceremony are offered as incentives for restaurants to join the program.

Eat Smart! partners in the Sudbury and Manitoulin districts include the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, Canadian Cancer Society and the Sudbury Heart Health Coalition.
