Construction work is to blame for a gas leak at Laurentian University this morning, according to Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

“All I can tell you is that the gas has been shut off by the contractor,” said Platoon Chief George Lalonde.

“Somebody was digging and accidentally broke a line. They were able to shut it off on the scene, and natural gas has been called in.”

Now that the gas line has been shut off, people have been let back into the Parker and Great Hall buildings, and pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic is flowing normally again, Lalonde said.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 7:44 a.m. this morning, he said.

A similar situation occurred at Laurentian in November of last year.

In that incident, the Parker, Arts and Great Hall buildings were evacuated after construction crews working on campus modernization caused a gas leak in the corridor between the Parker Building and the Great Hall.

The Parker and Great Hall buildings at Laurentian University are closed until further notice due to a gas leak, according to posts put up at around 8:10 a.m. this morning on the university's social media accounts.

This closure will affect traffic through the area, so please take alternate routes, a Facebook post said.
