Save those seeds - for Sudbury’s next Seedy Sunday, taking place on March 3, 2024 at Science North.

“We want to remind people to save seeds while there are still plants to harvest locally,” says Rachelle Rocha, one of the event’s organizers. “We often get people saying they wish they’d thought of it earlier.”

Rocha explains that many seeds are quite easy to save and suggests a book published by Seeds of Diversity Canada called How to Save Your Own Seeds. The guide can be purchased from the Seeds of Diversity website or is available locally at Seasons Pharmacy & Culinaria for $15.

She adds that the Seeds of Diversity website (www.seeds.ca) is an excellent resource for information about seed saving, and also suggests people check out Seedy Sudbury’s YouTube channel for helpful videos: youtube.com/channel/UCYi92Qwfy4KzYT0Ei3ZdROg

Participants are encouraged to bring seeds to the event to exchange with others. Rocha says there will also be speakers, hands-on workshops, plus seeds and related products for sale. The group will share more details on social media (@seedysudbury on Facebook and Instagram).

Last year’s event drew hundreds of participants and organizers expect even more this year.

“We have seen a huge rise in interest in everything related to growing food in the past few years and more and more people who are saving their own seeds,” Rocha says.

If anyone has seeds to donate for the seed exchange, Seedy Sudbury will be receiving them for sorting and packaging seeds at Seasons Pharmacy and Culinaria between now and mid February.
