Three schools in the Greater Sudbury district have won $1,000 each from the grocery store chain Metro Inc. through the chain's Green Apple School Program to implement environmental initiatives.

Long Lake Public School will develop a garden to contribute to the community's “eat local” program, Valley View Public School will put the grant towards improving their organic waste composting program which will produce fertilizer to enrich the school gardens, and E.S de le Rivière des Français in Noelville will aim to reduce their carbon footprint by revitalizing their unused greenhouse and growing vegetables for the community.

The schools are among 168 in the province to win the awards after submitting proposals to Metro.

Submissions to the program will be accepted until March 1, 2010, with grants being awarded throughout the year. For more information or to register online, please visit www.greenapplegrants.ca.
