For the fourth year, Maison Vale Hospice will host its KIA Butterflies and Memories event, aimed at honouring loved ones who have passed away while supporting the hospice.

For the first time, the annual event will take place at Science North, near the Rusty Blakey monument.

“We wanted to do it somewhere central,” said Maison Vale Hospice executive director Léo Therrien.

In its first three years, the event has raised $43,000 to help cover the hospice's operational costs.

“The government pays for the nursing and supportive care, but it doesn't cover the other costs that help with operating the hospice,” Therrien said.

Families can purchase monarch butterflies for $30, and dedicate them to a loved one who has passed away.

On Sunday, July 19, the butterflies will be released outside Science North.

Last year, Therrien said they released around 350 butterflies. The fundraiser is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

It's possible to purchase butterflies through NorthernLife.ca.
