Scotiabank donates $250K to help build NEO Kids centre

'Through this donation, we hope to help young people reach their infinite potential'

Kids' health care in this part of the province is getting a $250,000 boost from Scotiabank.

The banking institution's donation, announced at a June 26 press conference, will go toward expanding the NEO Kids Care Centre at Health Sciences North.

NEO Kids has outgrown its temporary location, and HSN is planning a new, expanded centre to house the NEO Kids & Family Program at HSN.

“I really want to thank you for your large donation,” said Dr. Sean Murray, chief of pediatrics at HSN and medical director of NEO Kids & Family Program.

Murray adds that donations such as these are “contagious.”

“Keeping that momentum going is really, really important and positive,” he said.

The pediatrician said he's been trying to get a NEO Kids centre built at the hospital for the last 10 or 15 years so kids can be cared for as close to home as possible.

He said he's “very encouraged and energized” that NEO Kids has been made a priority under HSN's current leadership and strategic plan.

Representatives of Scotiabank did not wish to be interviewed at the press conference.

However, quotes attributed to an official from the banking institution were included in a press release put out by NEO Kids.

“Scotiabank and its employees are focused on enriching the lives of young people and their communities,” said Kevin Proctor, Ontario North District vice president at Scotiabank, in the press release.

“Through this donation, we hope to help young people reach their infinite potential by investing in their health. Young people are our future leaders and Scotiabank’s goal is to help ensure that they have the necessary and resources they need to grow into healthy, contributing adults.”

Shanna Crispo, interim executive director with the NEO Kids Foundation, said in the press release the foundation is “extremely grateful” to Scotiabank for the donation.

“This donation will help us transform the future of pediatric health care in northeastern Ontario,” she said.

“It will ensure our children and their families stay closer to home for the specialized care they need and deserve. NEO Kids is making a difference in the lives of children and will continue to make a difference in our community for years to come thanks to generous donors like Scotiabank. Thank you for your exemplary leadership and continued support. It is truly inspiring and appreciated.”
