A second student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a letter to parents, Rainbow District School Board said students in two classes have been asked to self-isolate up to and including Nov. 4. These students, their parents/guardians and relevant staff have been notified by the school.

The student is self-isolating and being monitored by Public Health Sudbury and Districts.

While the situation is evolving, the health unit said there is no evidence of transmission in the school at this time, and Lo-Ellen remains open.

Public Health will directly contact all parents/guardians of students and all school personnel who have been identified as close contacts.

The first positive case at the high school was reported Oct. 22.

A letter to parents from the health unit said, in general, for COVID-19, a close contact is anyone who was within two metres or six feet of an infected person without proper personal protective equipment (PPE) for at least 15 minutes during the time of infectivity.

An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours (or two days) before the person had any symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19.

Passing a person in the hallway is considered low risk of spreading the virus.

Norm Blaseg, director of education, said in the letter the board continues to work closely with the health unit, and reminds parents and guardians to screen their children daily for symptoms of COVID-19.

"As always, we will monitor our school population closely for any signs of COVID-19, remain vigilant, and follow the guidelines from Public Health," he said.

Public Health continues to investigate the situation, and if any more risks to the school community are identified, they may direct additional measures, Blaseg said.
