For the second time this month, a member of the Cambrian College community has tested positive for COVID-19.

Cambrian said Wednesday that work and learning assignments for staff and students would continue as scheduled for the remainder of the day. The school did not specify whether the case was among staff or students.

The college’s president, Bill Best, announced on Cambrian’s website Wednesday that a member of the “Cambrian community” has informed college officials that they tested positive for the virus.

Cambrian also announced on Oct. 5 that a member of the college community had tested positive for COVID-19, but classes also continued as scheduled at that time.

With the latest case, Cambrian said the person was last on campus Monday, Oct. 19, for most of the day, in various locations, but none involving student instruction or active portions of student residence.

Contact tracing is being managed by Public Health Sudbury & Districts (PHSD). Only those considered a close contact will be contacted by Public Health. Those not contacted are deemed to have been at low risk for exposure, said Best.

A close contact is defined as being within two metres (six feet) of someone with COVID-19, for at least 15 minutes, without personal protective equipment (PPE). Best said the college is not aware at this point that anyone at Cambrian is considered a close contact because of potential exposure on campus.

The college will be conducting extra cleaning of the areas on campus where this individual may have been, over and above its daily routine of thorough cleaning of high-traffic areas and high-touch surfaces.

The individual who tested positive is in self-isolation “and we are supporting them in any way we can,” Best said, in his statement. “We wish them a full and quick recovery.”

The college said as part of its routine COVID prevention measures, it requires the cleaning of teaching areas and teaching tools before and after each use, controlled entrances and pre-screening for COVID symptoms before access is granted to campus, physical distancing measures, and a requirement to wear face coverings while inside campus buildings.

“We are confident these measures will help us minimize the risk of the spread of COVID on campus,” Best said, in his statement. “If you follow these best practices, your risk of contracting COVID on campus is low.”
