Updated at 4:07 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm warning issued by Environment Canada this afternoon for Greater Sudbury and area has ended. 

Updated at 3:25 p.m.: Although the weather radar and some breaks in the clouds seem to indicate otherwise, Environment Canada has now changed its designation of this afternoon's potential for severe weather from a watch to a warning.

The Environment Canada warning is as follows:

At 3:10 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, dime to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

These thunderstorms are located mainly along highway 17 from near Nairn to near Markstay and are tracking eastward. Updated or ended by 4:17 p.m. EDT. At 3:10 PM EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking an area of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, dime to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

These thunderstorms are located mainly along highway 17 from near Nairn to near Markstay and are tracking eastward.

Environment Canada is warning Greater Sudbury that conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts this afternoon. 

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required.
