Update: Tornado watch ended for Greater Sudbury and vicinity

Updated Sept. 11 at 7:39 p.m.: Environment Canada has advised that the tornado watch which was in effect for Greater Sudbury and the region has ended.

A tornado watch is now in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes, said the alert, issued at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Isolated tornadoes are possible from severe thunderstorms this afternoon into early evening.

Damaging wind gusts and large hail are also possible.

This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain, said the advisory, issued by Environment Canada in the early afternoon Saturday.

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into this evening as a cold front races eastward across Northeastern Ontario

The main threat appears to be damaging wind gusts at this point.

An isolated tornado is possible. If the risk of a tornado increases, this watch may be changed to a tornado watch later this afternoon.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
