Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your weekend.

Get weird, Sudbury: Up Here Fest is here:

Are you ready to get weird, Sudbury? Because the Up Here Urban Art + Music Festival is here. Organizers Christian Pelletier and Jen McKerral kicked off the festival Friday at Kuppajo Espresso Bar on Larch Street, opposite the new large-scale mural by street artist Jarus, depicting a female nickel miner. DJ Your Worship, Mayor Brian Bigger's nightclub disc-jockey persona, didn't make an appearance as he has in years previous, but the mayor as himself was on hand. The festival features some 40 musical acts spread across 10 Downtown Sudbury venues Friday through Sunday. Sudbury.com has provided extensive coverage on the festival and will continue to throughout the weekend's weirdness.

Lost loved ones to be honoured at butterfly release this weekend:

Maison McCulloch Hospice will host the 2017 Desjardins live butterfly release this Sunday, Aug. 20 at Science North. Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the release of more than 500 butterflies will take place at 4 p.m.

Mudmoiselle Sudbury takes over Adanac ski hill:

Get ready for a day of mud, sweat and cheers. The Mudmoiselle obstacle course takes over Adanac ski hill on Saturday Aug. 19. This 5 km stretch of Canada’s muckiest, filthiest, slimiest mud. It’s where your inner child runs free while testing your endurance, strength and ability to keep a straight face. This women’s-only event is open to all fitness levels. Whether you’re used to running 10k or just running after your toddler, you can take on this challenge. Sudbury.com will bring you coverage from this event so be sure to check back with us.

GSSC to receive provincial recognition:

Greater Sudbury Soccer Club (GSSC) will become the first soccer association in Northern Ontario to be given bronze certification this Saturday, Aug. 19. Club President Joe Snofl will be joined by Mayor Brian Bigger and Susan Belli, along with players and parents for the 2017 Fabio Belli Memorial Soccer Festival at the Howard Armstrong Soccer Fields in Hanmer at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday for the presentation.

'Stompa' with Serena Ryder at free concert in Bell Park Aug. 19:

Multiple Juno award-winning Toronto musician Serena Ryder said she's “stoked” to be headlining the ONTour concert series performance at Bell Park's Grace Hartman Amphitheatre on Saturday, Aug. 19. The free concert, marking Ontario's 150th anniversary, is part of a series of shows in more than 20 communities across the province this summer. Other performers at the Sudbury show, which gets underway at 7 p.m., include Coleman Hell, Mia Martina, Jonathan Roy and the Nickel City's own Stef Paquette.

Sunday marks anniversary of 1970 tornado:

When Sudburians awoke on the morning of Aug. 20, 1970, the weather for the day was projected to be cloudy with a chance of showers. By 8:30 a.m., however, that forecast couldn’t have been further from reality. Around that time, parts of Sudbury and Lively were devastated when a violent storm struck without warning. As the sky darkened, the clouds unleashed a torrent of rain and hail and winds as strong as 100 miles an hour battered the Nickel Belt. Within 10 minutes, it was over, but the destruction was significant. Six people were dead, 200 injured, hundreds were homeless and more than $17 million worth of damage was caused. Check back with Sudbury.com on Sunday for more on the anniversary of the 1970 tornado.

Weekend weather:

Mainly cloudy on Saturday with a 60 per cent chance of showers in the morning and early in the afternoon. The high for Saturday is expected to be around 20. Cloudy in the evening with a low near 14. Sunday is calling for a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 25. Cloudy periods to close out the weekend with a low of 17.
