Songs of Summer: The son of the Stomper and tunes in the park to help save Theatre Cambrian

Community theatre company experiencing financial challenges

Theatre Cambrian's Songs of Summer Music Festival used the power of music to help it overcome some financial hurdles last week.

From rock and roll, to funk and soul, to blues and country, eight local bands took part in a special music festival to support one of Sudbury's longest-running community theatres.

Local acts Tea and Whiskey, The Committed, Sugar Boom, Natalie Crispo, Celine Tellier, Matt Naveau, JoPo and the Rize and Larry Berrio have come together to support the Songs of Summer Festival and Theatre Cambrian.

Larry Berrio, who recently played Stars and Thunder with Johnny Reid and Keith Urban, will close off the night. All concerts will be held in the band shell.

And a special performance at Theatre Cambrian itself by Taw Connors, the son of Stompin' Tom Connors, on Saturday night was part of the fundraising efforts as well.

The event is a fundraiser for Theatre Cambrian, which is experiencing some financial challenges.

"In its over 30-year history, operational costs continue to rise, which makes it more challenging to produce quality community theatre and keep it affordable for our patrons," said Theatre Cambrian vice chair Rod Bazinet, in a press release.

"Community theatre enriches the lives of others, is essential to the health of our communities and offers life changing experiences," Bazinet said.

Admission to the festival is free, although voluntary donations are encouraged. Online donations can also be made. Follow Theatre Cambrian's Facebook page for a link to the online donations and a live stream of the concert.

Local food vendors will be on site, so grab a picnic table or blanket and enjoy some great food and live music.

Songs of Summer will also include an event at Theatre Cambrian on July 29. Longtime theatre performer and musician Kass Bazinet performs as part of the Bell Park Concert Series on July 30.
