Spark literacy program offered to adults in Sudbury

Employment services agency is offering to provide basic work skills and literacy to adults, both employed and unemployed, who need to improve themselves

Spark Employment Services in Sudbury is offering its Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program to adults who would benefit from acquiring those skills.

Spark, which has an office at 435 Notre Dame in Sudbury, said the program which is designed to uplift adults across Ontario, and equips the participants with essential communication, numeracy, interpersonal, and digital skills, enabling them to achieve their goals and unlock new opportunities.

The LBS program is being offered to a diverse range of learners, placing special emphasis on unemployed adults, including those receiving income support, said a news release.

The program is also open to working adults who seek to enhance their literacy and basic skills to maintain or boost their current work situations.  

"The program stands as a pillar of support for individuals aiming to transition to employment, pursue higher education, engage in apprenticeships, re-enter secondary school, or gain greater independence," said the release.

The company said that continuous learning is what it takes for personal and professional growth for many learners.

"Our LBS program embodies our commitment to equipping individuals with the tools they need to thrive," said Ginette Comeau-Roy, Training and Skills Development Manager at Spark Employment Services. 

"From interactive workshops and cutting-edge e-learning options to an array of specialized courses, our offerings are designed to cater to unique goals and ambitions," she added.

Spark said it offers a wide range of helpful courses and workshops. Participants have the opportunity to engage in Microsoft Office Workplace Essentials training, Customer Service and Retail training, financial literacy training, PowerSkills training, public speaking and workplace communication training, GED preparation, and an array of enriching options, said the news release. 

Adults working on achieving their General Educational Development (GED®) certification should be aware that as of May 3rd, 2024, Pearson VUE GED Testing Service (GEDTS) will stop GED® testing operations in Canada. However, the prevailing Canadian version of the GED® will remain accessible until that date, offering a valuable pathway for attaining a high school equivalency certificate in Ontario, said Spark. 

Adult learners can continue  to use Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) opportunities through school boards to work towards achieving the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
