A special weather statement is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Snow will begin this afternoon and intensify this evening, said the statement, issued by Environment Canada just before 5 a.m. Thursday.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are possible before snow tapers off during the day Friday.

Locally higher amounts near Georgian Bay are expected. Travel may be affected.

This will be a long duration snow event. Snowfall warning criteria of 15 cm or more in 12 hours or less is not expected to be met at this time.

This snow is associated with an Alberta Clipper tracking across northeastern Ontario tonight.
