Sudburians stand up for science

Science supporters take to the streets during March for Science

More than 50 Sudburians marched from Health Sciences North to Memorial Park on April 22 in the city's first ever March for Science.

Thousands of scientists worldwide, including those in Canada, took to the streets today to rail against what they say are mounting attacks against science.

The March for Science, which coincides with Earth Day, took place in more than 500 cities around the world — with about 18 scheduled in cities across Canada.

Sudbury was one of those cities, and the turnout was a pleasant surprise for organizer Kaella Earle.

"I definitely wasn't expecting this many people," said Earle, a chemical engineering student at Laurentian University.

"It's a really diverse crowd which is great to see, there's children, adults, scientists and people who are just general supporters of science."

The marches were initiated in Washington and the protests put scientists, who generally shy away from advocacy and whose work depends on objective experimentation, into a more public position.

The message from the crowd in Sudbury was that science can't be silenced and that critical thinking must be encouraged in today's society.
