A medical technology startup firm based in Sudbury is getting some recognition on the international stage.

KE2 Technologies, founded by Sudbury's Dr. Joe Eibl, was one of the winners of the Displaying Futures Award, given out by Merck KGaA, a leading science and technology company based in Darmstadt, Germany.

The award, worth $50,000, was for KE2's FloPatch, an ultrasound bandage that can monitor a patient's blood flow in real time.

“The sensor is applied to determine the effectiveness of emergency interventions within seconds, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation compressions and fluid responsiveness,” Merck said in a news release about the award.

The goal is to promote the success of young companies working in the high-tech field, the Merck release said. Each year, they seek applications in the field of hybrid electronics.

“The number of ideas submitted (this year) rose from 31 to 69, submitted by creative minds from 22 countries,” the release said. “The 10 best teams gathered for the event to pitch their ideas in Darmstadt on June 23, 2017. The winning teams have devoted themselves to future-oriented technologies, such as wearable biomonitoring devices, soft robotics, electronic sensors, or packaging.”

A jury of specialists from all areas of the company chose three winning teams. The winners were evaluated based on the criteria of novelty, business potential, and impacts on society and the environment.

“In addition to financial support, for one year the winners of the Displaying Futures Awards will receive training, exclusive mentoring from experts within and outside of Merck KGaA,” the release said.
