Dieter Buse and Graeme Mount have spent the last few years researching and writing about Northeastern Ontario's military history, bringing the stories of this region's past to life.
Latitude 46 Publishing has released the first ever compilation of our region's military history, “Untold: Northeastern Ontario's Military Past Volume 1, 1662- World War 1.”
A series of author presentations by Buse, a professor emeritus of history at Laurentian University, and Mount, a now-retired Laurentian history professor, are scheduled throughout the Northeastern Ontario region. The official book launch takes place 7 p.m. October 16 at the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Admission is free.
Brought together for the first time are the remarkable and mostly unacknowledged contributions, experiences, and remembrances of warfare by the people of Northeastern Ontario.
Untold chronicles the stories of men and women from the region who contributed to the war effort, of Indigenous people who participated yet were excluded, of soldiers and civilians captured and incarcerated.
“Until now military contributions by Northeastern Ontario has received little acknowledgement in books and articles,” said Buse. “Untold: Northeastern Ontario’s Military Past seeks to fill in the gaps of our collective knowledge of our region and our people.”
The book also contains rare photos, anecdotes and even writing space to encourage readers to delve into their own family histories.
Untold explores battles that took place in Northeastern Ontario, the overseas war-zone activities of men and women from Northeastern Ontario, events on the home front during successive conflicts, and the ways in which subsequent generations have remembered the warriors and peace-keepers.
Books can be purchased at Chapters Indigo, Amazon, and select independent bookstores across Canada and the United States or through Latitude 46 Publishing online store www.latitude46publishing.com.
The second volume of “Untold: Northeastern Ontario’s Military Past” is scheduled for a fall 2019 release.
