Racers embark on the Perdue Family Lise's 10K Run/Walk during the Sudbury Rocks Marathon in downtown Sudbury in 2023.

It's Sudbury Rocks weekend! The annual walk and run event in support of cancer care is happening in downtown Sudbury on Sunday, May 26.

The annual popular event featuring a marathon run along with walk and run events begins at 7:55 a.m. from Minto Street, across from the Memorial Park next to Tom Davies Square.

For avid walkers, there will be a marathon walk that begins from the same point at 6 a.m., said the website.

An additional feature this year will be the effort by Const. Michael Rouleau of the Greater Sudbury Police Service who will demonstrate dedication and support to cancer care in our community by running the marathon in full police gear.

Online registration is now closed. Organizers will accept last minute in person registrations on Saturday at the marathon expo event, which is taking place Saturday from 9 a.m, to 3 p.m. at École Secondaire Du Sacré-Coeur at 261 Notre Dame Ave.

With last year's success of more than $70,000 raised, organizers aim to surpass that in 2024 to benefit the Northern Cancer Foundation. The foundation does vital fundraising to support local, ground-breaking cancer research and to purchase vital, life-saving equipment.

The foundation relies on ordinary citizens to rally together, as a community, to  support those living across Northeastern Ontario who need access to cancer care, said the news release.
