Green Economy North will host its second annual Evening of Recognition today (April 12) at the Holiday Inn.
This event will celebrate the people and businesses in the community that have committed to lower their greenhouse gas emissions, and find ways to make less of an impact on the environment. Awards will be presented to select Green Economy North members, and also community-nominated Environmental Champions.
“We had so much fun at last year’s celebration,” said Leigha Benford, Communications Director for Green Economy North.
“This year is going to be even better, with a bigger membership, and way more carbon-reduction projects on the go. We’re excited to announce our award winners, and show just how proud we are of the entire membership for making a commitment to lower their environmental footprint.”
This year, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, Dr. Dianne Saxe, will lead the keynote address. Commissioner Saxe is tasked with being a tough but fair watchdog over Ontario’s environmental, energy and climate performance, and the guardian of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
The awards portion of the evening will see numerous businesses and individuals recognized for their environmental commitment. Winners of the 2018 Environmental Champion Awards, and 2018 Green Economy North member awards will be announced at the event.

Hiawatha Osawamick- Founder, Hiawatha’s Catering
Max Burt- Owner, Burt Farms Country Meats
Pat Tessier- Chair of Facilities. Management Program Council, Health Sciences North
Cheryl Recollect- Director of Sustainable Development, Wahnapitae First Nation
David Murray- Eco Life Home Improvements
"I am fortunate to be involved in an industry that forces you to live within the confines of your fence lines,” said finalist Max Burt, owner of Burt Farm Country Meats.
“By integrating many energy technologies into our farm, we have continued to improve our environmental responsibility for the food we produce. This is important to us and our customers, but mostly important to our children and our grandchildren. After all, food production simply must be sustainable. There is no other option.”

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with networking, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and live music from local group Hugh Jazz.
