Artist Monique Legault is the winner of the Sudbury Art Battle.

There were several rounds during the contest.

Each painter receives a canvas, brush, a palette, two mixing plates, cleaning towels and one water container. They have 20 minutes to take their canvases from blank to beautiful.

While the artists are creating, guests move around the easels, watching the creative process unfold. Once the round ends, the audience votes to determine who goes to the next round and the final winner.

The paintings are then auctioned off to members of the audience.

“When you think of a painting being created, the words fun, exciting and party aren’t what first comes to mind,” Legault told Sudbury.com back in November.

“The battle on the other hand, is all of those things. You will never experience such a rush watching paint dry.

“It’s a night out that has no comparison. A night you can have a drink with a friend or bring your kids and get inspired, you have to see it to get it.”

Art battles happens in more than 50 cities worldwide. As the winner of the Sudbury final, Legault has earned a spot at the National Championships in Toronto in July and will represent the city against painters from all across Canada.

In case you'd like to check out more of Legault's work, you can visit her studio at 172 Elgin St. (which happens to be just a few doors down from the Northern Life/Sudbury.com office).
