The June heat wave Greater Sudbury is experiencing is officially record-breaking.

The previous record for June 6 was set in 1976, when it was 31.1 C. Yesterday’s temperature got up to 31.3 C.

Today’s temperature is supposed to get up to 30 C. The temperature record in Greater Sudbury for June 7 was also set in 1976, when the temperature got up to 31.1 C.

So if the forecasters are off by a degree or so, it’s possible a temperature record could be set today too.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Greater Sudbury and vicinity.

Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to be near 30 C this afternoon and again Tuesday afternoon. Overnight lows are expected to bottom out in the upper teens or low twenties.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
